Dr. Angie Driscoll and Dr. Kelvin Broad are not simply logistics professionals — they are well-known and highly respected figures in the working dog world, holding both national and international herding titles. This is not a background detail. It is the foundation of everything we do.

Having competed at the highest levels of sheepdog trialling, and having worked with, bred and handled some of the finest working dogs in the UK, Angie and Kelvin understand better than anyone what makes these animals special — and what they need to arrive at their destination calm, healthy and ready to perform.

Why We Started

For years, breeders and owners exporting elite working dogs from the UK faced a frustrating choice: use a large, impersonal pet shipping company with little understanding of working breeds, or try to navigate the complex world of international pet travel regulations alone. Neither option was good enough for the calibre of animals being transported.

Kinloch Pet Travel was established by Dr. Angie Driscoll and Dr. Kelvin Broad to fill that gap — to offer a genuinely expert, genuinely personal service that treats every dog as the valued animal it is, and every client with the respect and attentiveness they deserve.

While we transport all breeds, our heart lies with the working dogs that define British farming and countryside heritage — border collies, huntaways, kelpies, labrador retrievers, spaniels and personal protection dogs. Since the UK left the European Union, the rules for travelling with dogs between the UK and EU member states have changed significantly. If you're planning to export a dog from the UK to Europe — or import one back — it's essential to understand the current requirements and how they differ from the pre-Brexit era.

What Has Changed?

Under the old Pet Travel Scheme, UK pet owners could travel freely into and out of the EU with relatively straightforward paperwork. Post-Brexit, the UK is now treated as a "third country" by the EU, meaning stricter import rules apply. Dogs travelling from the UK to the EU now require an official health certificate (known as an EU health certificate or AHC) issued by an Official Veterinarian within 10 days of travel.

Key Requirements for UK → EU Travel

• Valid ISO-compliant microchip (implanted before or at the same time as the rabies vaccination)
• Up-to-date rabies vaccination — the dog must be at least 12 weeks old at the time of vaccination
• An Animal Health Certificate (AHC) issued by an APHA-approved Official Veterinarian within 10 days of travel
• Tapeworm treatment (for travel to Finland, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Norway and Malta) administered 1–5 days before arrival
• A waiting period of 21 days after the first rabies vaccination before travel is permitted

What About Returning to the UK?

Dogs returning to Great Britain from the EU require a GB Pet Health Certificate or a valid EU pet passport (if the animal was issued one before Brexit). The rules for Northern Ireland differ slightly due to the Windsor Framework — please contact us for specific guidance.

One of the most common concerns we hear from owners is worry about their dog travelling in the cargo hold of an aircraft. It's a completely understandable concern — but the reality is far more reassuring than many people expect. With proper preparation and the right transport company handling the arrangements, cargo travel is a safe, comfortable experience for the vast majority of dogs.

What Is the Cargo Hold Actually Like?

The cargo hold of a passenger aircraft is pressurised, heated and climate-controlled to the same standard as the passenger cabin. There is no dramatic change in temperature or air pressure — conditions are kept comfortable and stable throughout the flight. Dogs are housed in IATA-approved kennels that provide enough room to stand, turn around and lie down, and the kennels are secured to prevent movement during the flight.

What Do Dogs Actually Experience?

The most common outcome — by far — is that dogs simply sleep. The combination of the white noise from the aircraft engines, the darkness of the hold, and the familiar scent of their own kennel creates a surprisingly calm environment. Most dogs, particularly those who have been properly crate-trained before their journey, show no signs of distress upon arrival and are alert and ready to go within minutes of landing.

How We Prepare Your Dog for the Journey

• We recommend crate training well in advance so the kennel feels like a safe, familiar space
• We personally collect your dog and give them a thorough walk and fresh water before check-in
• We choose flight itineraries that minimise total travel time and avoid unnecessary connections
• We avoid travel during extreme weather where possible, and work with airlines known for their animal welfare standards
• We provide bedding with familiar scents and, where appropriate, a well-worn item of your clothing

Which Airlines Do We Use?

We work with reputable carriers that have strong animal welfare protocols and dedicated live animal handling teams. Not all airlines are equal when it comes to animal transport, and our experience allows us to select the best option for each specific route and dog.
